About Gum Disease
The support of the structures of the smile, such as the teeth, gums, and bone, are all part of periodontal dentistry. Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is a serious and common issue that starts as low scale gingivitis and can continue to progress into later stages such as necrotizing periodontitis. This condition can have severe and permanent consequences to one’s oral health. Periodontal health and the treatment of gum disease are essential at the office of Dr. Mina Levi. Our team provides treatment services as well as products and treatments that can support oral health and provide preventative options for our patients to consider.
Gum disease is caused by bacteria that reaches below the gum line. This condition is the number one cause of adult tooth loss for patients in the United States. It is important for patients to follow their dentist’s advice to diagnose and treat gum disease in the earliest stages. Patients have an option—they can prevent the condition by taking good care of their oral health, or avoid treatment and allow the disease to further progress. Gum disease can lead to serious problems that may later require expensive and painful surgeries. Tooth loss is also a concern. Treatment of moderate to severe gum disease may be done by scaling and root planing (or SRP) and the application of ARESTIN®.
